Ray said that by removing the shaft first, it ruins the seal and bearing. I'd think the impeller would get mangled in the process. If I had a few spare cores laying around, I'd try a few ways of pulling off the whole shebang. I only have one LA pump, and it's new... so better not destroy it if I can help it! :)
