If points burn excessively fast, the condenser mfd rating isn't a proper match to coil/volt/load. I forget which way, but build up on one side of points is one way, other side the other- that is too much or too low mfd rating.

And re: bypassing the ballast on foot pedal starter vehicles, there were some starter switches (on the starter) with a side connection for the bypass wire. Small screw. It needs a diode or it will kill the engine when pedal is released, since starter windings are a virtual dead short to ground. I wonder if I have any of those switches on a spare starter? I'm running Mopar electronics / 230, and it starts better when I turn the key to 'start' when I push the pedal.
