Thanks for all the replies on my question about paper gaskets. I did drain my trans again and replace two of the paper gaskets, this time with a different gasket material and different sealer.
Regarding D Sherman's comments:

You might have just made it up, but I was thinking the same thing....
"Modern paper is more porous and lets more oil seep through it than old paper did. Same thing as above. "
I can't understand why anyone would use a porous material like paper for a gasket in the first place... I guess folks drink coffee out of paper cups, but they normally don't keep the cups with coffee in them for a 60 years!
