You know, I've always found the big blocks & small blocks very similar for fuel economy, assuming you drive them both the same. A 318 would be working so hard to push that big unit that the fuel wouldn't be great either. That said, most folks kind of get used to that extra power & kind of like using it :)
My 71 W300 with the 11.00x16's & 383 got 12mpg at 70mph on the freeway...I doubt a 318 would be much better.
I'd throw a vintage knuckle boom in that thar space...right after the Rockwell front end & transfer case :) :)
