It's not like you're going to ever need to unscrew the nuts anyway. I like that heavy zinc primer for things like that. It actually does act a fair bit like real galvanizing. Some gloss paint over top to seal the pores (whatever odd color you have laying around) and they'd probably never rust. I bet the good ones were cad plated, but nowadays cadmium is "out" for being toxic.
