Military Lights

I have a set of Military Lights on my Pw that I am removing, but wonder about their purpose.

One light set left and right is marked ACCO.
It is a dual purpose light, the top having a half circle clear lens with a magnifing lens in the outside edge. Below that is a translucient pannel with 2 small triangle looking marks that light up. The top and bottom are powered by 2 seperate bulbs.

The other light is a small square unit with a bulb and lens. In front of the lens is a slit about 3/16 wide with a hood over it.

How were these lights used ? Could you really see to drive at night with them ?
