The first Smoothe sided Dodge box came in in mid year 1957. This box was called the "Sweptside" and that was due to the fact that it was the only Domestic truck built at the time that had tailfins!
The side panels of the Sweptside box were the rear quarters and panels off a Plymouth Suburban station wagon. Hence the term Sweptside, meaning the fins swept back. Well the Sweptside was built thru 1959 in Very limited numbers. The Sweptside truck was a very limited run with only about 2500 made in the 57-59 period.

In 1959 the First standard Dodge production smooth side box came out. This was known as the Sweptline. From now on, Sweptline was the Dodge term for smoothe side box, and the stepside was known as utiline. For example, Ford called there smooth side a styleside and Chevy first called it Cameo, then Apache, and then they called it Fleetside... Well Sweptline was the term used for the box of the Dodge truck from 59-1960. Then in 1961 the body style called Sweptline came out. The Sweptline body style of truck was built from 1961-1971 and all look very similar. In the 61-71 Period Sweptline refers to the bodyline crease that runs the leinth of the body in the middle of the body. The Sweptline trucks were alot different from their "Power Giant" 57-60 predecessors. Also the Term Sweptline refers to the "Sleekness" of the 61-71 Trucks.

Dodge Sweptline trucks are my personal favorite vehicle of all time (yes, I even like them better than the M-37...But SOmeday I will have both at once!)

Also an interesting note, the First style (59-60) DOdge Sweptline box was also used by Studebaker on their Champ series trucks from '61 to the end of stude truck production in early 65

Sweptlines rule!
