I know that VPW recommends turning the drums. If nothing else it sure makes for a smoother pedal. I don't recommend turning the drums every time you replace the shoes, but these old trucks that are being restored usually have been found sitting in Farmer Brown's field or barn or some old wrecking yard and have substantial rust and pitting. In that case it's better to turn and equalize the braking. Sure beats having that one drum or two, grabbing and then having to apply all that arm power to keep the old gal on the road. Regarding the turning of rotors, I'd have to say turn them if they've been on a pickup that has been used for pulling a heavy trailer or load. The rotors are very susceptible to warping from excessive heat. As a side note it seems that in colder weather ie: Alaska, they have a tendency to warp easier than in temperate climates. All it takes is one pass through a water hole or dip with hot brakes and they're warped. As Dennis Miller would say "Of course that's just my opinion and I might be wrong"!
