If it fires up and runs good, and then starts knocking, louder and louder, do not wait for it to "clear up" on its own. Did that with a little 4-cyl hercules once that turned out to be pristine inside, but for some reason the oil passage to one rod bearing was plugged and by the time I shut it down, it had turned the bearing shells into nice neat shavings like lathe turnings, and had chewed up the crank and rod.

I would not do a huge amount of special stuff to it before trying to start it -- just oil in the cylinders, and crank until there's oil pressure before applying spark -- but I would definitely listen real close and shut it down immediately if there's any bad noise. A stuck valve might clear up on its own with no harm done, but a bad bearing or lack of oil anywhere will not fix itself.
