Anyone run gear oil in wheel bearings??

If the outer rear axle seal goes out 90 wt gets in the bearings and washes out the grease.
Is there any problem with leaving the seal out and letting the wheel bearings run in 90 weight? the problem I foresee is the inner seal may leak 90 wt into the brakes? Anyone try it?
