Are there any codes set? I can't tell from the picture what year your rig is but you can do the key trick on 2000 and newer and sometimes read the codes in the odometer window. If you have a CEL on, most auto parts places here will read codes for you. Might give an idea what is going on.

I have had mine go through the converter clutch lock-unlock deal. Guys that know more than I claim it is an electrical glitch that causes it. I do know I had inadvertently discovered if I move the ground wire running by the alternator as far away from it as I can it does not do it anymore. I had the alternator off to clean the radiator fins and tab the KDP and had it checked at the local auto parts. One test showed bad even thought it seems to charge fine. My guess, a new alternator and it would not do the converter cycling anymore.
