Tried something new today, and will see how it works, but thought I'd ask if anyone's tried anything similar. This is on my honda car. The hole is right where the pipe flares and is welded into the resonator, all a one-piece factory unit that I don't want to replace if I can help it. I've learned that trying to weld up holes in old exhaust pipes just makes bigger holes, and the "muffler bandage" tapes don't hold up for any length of time at all. The the beer can and bailing wire method is definitely a field expedient.

So, here's what I did. One strip of soft asbestos paper smeared liberally with high-temp RTV pasted over the hole and well pressed down, sort of like paper mache. Then a strip of thin aluminum also smeared with RTV put over the asbestos paper and almost all the way around the pipe, and then two hose clamps tightened down to hold it all together. Out of pocket cost was zero. Will let it dry today before firing it up. I'll be taking a long trip with it over Memorial Day and didn't want to sound like some street punk wherever I went.
