A runaway diesel is being fueled by some source other than the diesel fuel system. Shutting down in the normal way will NOT stop the engine. Entering a area of combustible or flammable gas will fuel the engine. Blown turbo seals will allow engine lube oil to feed the engine. These are examples, there are others. The only way to stop it is by shutting down the air supply, or dumping a C02 fire extinguisher in the air intake.

The engine will increase in RPM's quickly and keep going faster and faster until destruction. NEVER NEVER even think of blocking the air intake with your hand NEVER.

There are companies that make emergency air shutdowns.

If a diesel goes into some over speed condition, ****"BUT"**** can be shut down by the normal means, you did not experience a true runaway. You most likely had a governor issue misbehaving.
