After reading the posts, I thought I fully understood the situation. However, when I started messing with the end gaskets, I realized there's still more to learn.

The gasket strips certainly seem too long. Yet, I can see that maybe they can be compressed when the pan is tightened down. The old one looked like they are broken because they had shrunk down, so leaving them long and under compression seems like a good idea.

However trimming them until they stand 1/8" above the pan lip seems like a good idea too as the seem too long otherwise, But, why would the gasket maker make them too long?

Also, what's with the small notch in the end of the two side gaskets? I can see that there is something that looks like the remnant of a seal that is coming down from the rear bearing. Is something supposed to fit into the notches? Where do those "h" shaped pieces fit?

The manual I have in the shop doesn't show anything. But, I am researching the manuals I have on PDF.
