I replaced the front seal because of engine oil leaks on my FFPW. I wanted to replace the front seal anyway as I was freshening up the front of the engine.

I pulled the pan getting ready to fix a leak in what I thought was the rear seal. When I lowered the pan, I found that the cork gaskets at each end of the pan were split clear through. The rear gasket had a 3/8" gap and the loose piece had slid upwards an equal amount. The front piece had a 1/8" crack, but was in place.

I guess the pieces had dried out and split. But, I'm curious as to what caused the section of the rear piece to move up. Maybe, it was installed improperly. Is splitting of the end cork pieces a common occurrence?

Anyway, what are people doing when they replace the pan gaskets? Are they just using the supplied cork strips and sealer? Or, has anyone been successful using silicone sealant alone to fill the gap?
