Well, I got my wood and started playing with the plans for the stake pockets. My plans SUCK! The difference between an engineers design and reality.

I was going to fab a box (open on the ends) to fit around the stake and cut it into the side of the bed through the perimeter tubing.

The perimeter of the bed is made from 2" x 4" x 11 ga (.120) tubing. The stake pockets are a finished oak of 1.5" x 3.5". Theoretically a box made of 11 ga with a little room around the 2x4 should fit into the other tube. However in reality it just doesn't.

So I decided to try a three sided stake pocket from a 2" x 4" x 3/6" tube. And cut these into the perimeter. One side open (like those you can buy) so the stake is still held be the inside surface of the tube while the other three sides by the three sided 2 x 4. IE putting an externally attached stake pocket inside the perimeter tube. Well that still doesn't work well either, as getting a 1.75" clear open hole in the top of the 2" wide 11 ga tube is very tough.

So, what do you think of just attaching the 3 sided 2 x 4 stake pockets on the outside of the frame? It would be easier, and probably stronger, but not look as "correct" as I'd liked. I'd have to move the bed back the additional 1.75" and that would set the bed 1.5" further to the rear, IE the center of the bed is 1.5" behind the rear wheels.

Any other ideas or things to consider?
