Yikes! That sounds like a big bloody painful mess. And one of those things where you're "lucky" because it could have been so much worse. Sliding miter saws and radial arm saws seem particularly dangerous because unless you put muscle into restraining it, the blade will grab and pull itself towards you. With all other power tools, you feed the wood into the cutter, and if it binds, the wood might go flying but not the blade or the knife.

I cut the end of my finger pretty bad on my dad's table saw when I was a boy, but have been lucky ever since. I say "lucky" because there have been enough close calls to scare me. I think OSHA would have a fit in most of our garages and wood shops. Very few of us take all the required safety precautions, and yet we get by okay most of the time.

Your story is a good warning to all of us to be careful, not just with chop saws but with chain saws, jacks, torches, hoists, and even axes and chisels. Anything that can cut wood or metal can cut flesh like it was nothing, and anything that can lift something heavy can drop it on you.

I hope you recover quickly and can get back to work just like nothing happened.
