The rusty gear set is a gamble, but I'd try cleaning it up with an electrolysis cleaner (battery charger and washing soda) and see how they look. There's a ton of info on the web about electrolysis cleaners. I built one to clean a bunch of machine parts that were "trashed", and the results were spectacular.
If the gears salvageable, run it in the rear so it is easier to pull if it fails. Maybe run a used set of bearings in it so you don't have a lot invested. Best of luck!
