That is one huge hassle. I worry about it too. I've gotten in the bad habit of using web email all the time so I can look at the same mail at home or at the office. The trouble is that years of mail are now totally vulnerable to my ISP. I need to go back to "real" email or at least use POP3 once in a while to pull everything off their server onto my hard drive, where I can back it up whenever I want. Another problem with leaving it all on somebody else's server is they can read it.
There have been some big failures of "the cloud", both stuff getting lost, and security failures. I wouldn't trust it with anything important yet.
