Be careful with any negotiations. Particularly look at fine print to see if they can re-sell or "lend" the item.
Example: my ancestor was a Civil War Veteran. The flag of his regiment ended up on a museum in southern Oregon. Recently, I saw an advertisement for it, apparently they had sold it to some artifact dealer in Florida. I wonder if the descendents of the person who originally donated it to the museum are happy about this. I have other stories of museum mischief too. That said, I still have donating things to a museum, but am again, very careful.
