Will...This doesn't relate directly to your project, it's just that the recent flurry in flat-bed posts got me thinking.

A number of years ago, on the job, we needed to build three or four light duty flat-beds to replace deteriorated pick-up truck beds. We built them entirely of 2"x3" tube (box), right on the shop floor. Perimeter was 2"x3" on edge and cross members 2"x3" on the flat, flush on the bottom. This resulted in a 1" recess that was perfect for a 5/4" CCA pine deck. No rails were used; the bed was positioned on the chassis and 2"X3" 'legs' were fitted between the deck and chassis, and welded in place. Using this method of construction, plus only one size material, resulted in little waste. Cut-offs were used for legs, or if long enough, welded together and used for cross members.

As I said, these were light duty beds... Cheap, light, and not meant to look pretty or last forever.
