I currently have support at each end, 4" and 5" x 1/4" plate, welded to the channel and bolted to the frame. I will be adding one more plate, mid-span, between the hump over the axle and the channel, so the greatest span on the 3" channel will be slightly over 48". I don't think a continuous filler is necessary with three supports. I am going to weld a little post to the plate that will provide direct bearing between the channel and the frame.
I will be curious to see how your channel lines up with the frame. Mine is not parallel. I used a string line following the line in the cab above the door handle and made the bed parallel to the string, which is also parallel to the running boards.
