I have Millermatic 250X. I can weld anything from sheet to heavy stock. One thing you want to look at is Duty Cycle ( how long can you weld at higher ratings before you must let the welder cool. Yesterday I was welding a lot of .375" plate. It took a long time before my fan ever came on. The fan held the temp down so I could continue welding.

Buy a welder larger than you think you will need. Buy a name brand such as Miller, Lincoln or ESAB. Find a welding supplier close to you and buy what he sells. He is there for service and supplies.
