My neighbor is also a gear head. He tells me the good radiator shops use the paste that has powdered solder in it, just to tin the side brackets. I guess the powdered solder melts and tins before the flux has a chance to burn up.
I've got a bg electric iron, and an antique style chunk of copper on a handle. I'll try both to see if I can get solder to flow without bunring the flux.
