Not working for me either. My first car was a '49 Packard that I paid $200 for in 1971. It was in pretty good shape and I did a partial restore.

When I first bought I was too young for a drivers license, but my dad let me buy it with my own money (I strarted working at a general store 20-30 hours/week when I was 11). He said I needed to drive it up and down the driveway until I could get through all the gears without grinding and back it up using the mirror. Every morning and night for a month found me doing that and the day I turned 16 I got my license.

It rode like a dream and I could completely lay out across the backseat. Once you got it to 45 mph you could give a good twist to the wheel and it would weave back and forth in the lane and settle perfectly on straight ahead with no slap. Scared some passengers like that, but then again that's what 16 year old boys do.

That was back when I lived close to a junkyard that had at least six Packards and all were in restorable condition, but folks weren't doing much restoring then. One was a Packard limousine with the jump seats and a bunch of wood trim that was in excellent condition. That would be worth some big dollars today.

I picked up a perfect chrome bumper for about $35 and a perfect radio for $10. Rear wheel skirts for $30, but I had to paint them. Those days are long gone. I had to sell it four years later to pay for college. Sure wish I still had it. Last I heard about it some 25 years ago was that it became a trailer queen on the show circuit in the southeast.

This post brought back a lot of memories that hadn't surfaced in a very long time. Thanks
