I won't deny that materials were probably far better by WWII than most people give credit for. And I don't doubt that we use inferior metals in many areas nowadays. Other advances, such as lubrication technology and the ones you mention, have helped push us a long way, though, so in many cases, better materials are not necessary.

Keep in mind, though, we get longer-lived engines that put our more power and get better fuel mileage, in safer cars than we did back then. That's better engineering, plain and simple.

You say SOME modern cars last a long time. I say it's MOST - again given appropriate maintenance. Even my wife's Kia had nearly 175,000 miles on it when we sold it. She bought the car before I met her, and I would never buy one because I don't trust them as much as other cars, but we had very good service out of hers. When we sold it, the engine still ran great, but the tranny was starting to act up. The car was 11 years old, but the interior and the paint looked almost new, despite sitting outside all of its life and not getting washed or waxed very often.

I hate timing belts, though, I must admit, and hers had one. I think it's ridiculous for an automotive manufacturer to expect someone to PLAN to spend a lot of effort or a lot of money to replace a timing belt when a timing chain could be used.

As I stated in my earier post, is there room for improvement today? Absolutely. There are cars that go out the door that should never have gone out the door with the problems they have, but you don't think that was the case 60 years ago? It absolutely was. C'mon....

By and large, cars are better these days than they were "back in the day."
