I have built pole barns, decks, garages, storage sheds, low-income houses, and custom homes well in excess of a million dollars. I've been doing this for +/- 50 years. In that time, I have found that architects are masters at designing the "impossible to build", and engineers are masters at showing us how to make sure the "impossible to build" doesn't fail. The next statement will no doubt earn me some criticism, but the majority (NOT ALL) of men and women in these two capacities consider themselves to be somewhat on an equal level with God. (Higher power, whatever). The sad thing is the majority (again NOT ALL) of these have never picked up a tool in their lives. The best thing that could ever happen is for architects and engineers to be required to work in the field for 3 or 4 years before being turned loose on their own. I realize that my rant is clearly relative to the building industry, but I would venture to say the same mentality exists in all fields where over payed and under qualified individuals are taking the lead and blaming the guys who do the actual work when things go wrong. Next time you use your toilet for something serious, and it takes 2 or 3 flushes to clear it, remember that an engineer is responsible for the "water saving" design of that toilet. Disclaimer: I know some architects and engineers who are great guys and who will humbly ask the builder for his opinion and will usually acquiesce in favor of the more practical way of doing things.
