if you can train engineers as a designer and you have real applicable skills in machining and practical use, you should make the titular leap to engineer and get the pay and the glory! if your firm is as lax as you say, you could likely print up a sheepskin on a manilla folder and be good to go... on a serious note, your situation reminds me of the movie where the young lab assistant helps develop the techniques that are used on blue babies and open heart surgery. since he has no formal education and is not white, johns hopkins won't let him into the operating room. after many years,of training medical students, he was awarded an honorary doctorate and credit for his work.
