That was 25 years ago, looong before the welding shop burned down. ;^)
On the stainless tanks I make for sale, I use argon to purge them, then tig weld. If I wasn't Tiggiing, I'd use CO2. I keep it for nail guns and home kegs.
On top like that. I'd use epoxy gas tank repair putty. It's a two tone stick that you knead together until the colors blend. The sqush it into the holes.
Chewing gum used to work, great! The gas would harden it up. But that was yesteryear's gas, and yesteryear's gum. Jeeze, I liked the Black Jack gum. Tasted like Sen-Sen, and the color was good for auto work.
