My trick is to use a sawzall to cut the ball joint in half (horizontally) thru the rubber boot, then you can easily use a "C" frame ball joint press to pop the remaining taper out.
You will need to replace the ball joint, so this method should only be used if you tried everything else and already screwed up the joint.
This methos works great when trying to replace upper and lower ball joints on a 4wd front axle.
