The idea is good, but you need the right components. Straight threads won't seal right, even if you peen the ends. You need tapered threads. These people make all the tooling [and no, I have nothing to do with them]

Fixtures for hold spacing are part of the system. The individual pieces twist off at the right torque, the threads are tapered. You can do really beautiful work with this stuff. They make a number of kinds of studs.

It does not take long to get very skillful in the use of this system.
