Hey Jerry. I never tried removing an original cardboard glove box that way. It may be possible, but the old cardboard may also be brittle. Be careful.

I do not believe the steel replacements are made to do that. I have a WWII steel box in my '47 and it was not made that way. All the boxes I have installed/removed were by pulling out from under the dash AFTER I removed the heater. Was pretty easy doing it this way.
