Almost all automotive quality paint I have investigated recently are petroleum based. The

The hardeners for enamels, urethanes, polyurethanes, and clear coats have extremely toxic compounds, such as hexamethylene diisocyanate, which can affect affect the nervous system. Worse yet is that they accumulate in the body. Most professional body shops use an full protective suits and air supplied respirators when shooting these paints in a booth. Luckily for the general public living near a paint booth, these toxic compounds react very quickly with water vapor and become inert.

There is a federal regulation that has specific requirements for autobody paint booths. However, if you are a hobbiest and don't paint much, it doesn't affect you.
