When you turn up the fuel pressure on a VE pump, the increased pressure tends to increase wear on lobes of the rotary pump camplate.

The P7100 pump is designed with the capability to deliver more fuel, so you can turn it up without limiting the life of the pump. The P7100 is also lubricated by pressurized engine oil, whereas the VE pump is lubricated only by the diesel fuel.

My 6bt has 345,000 miles on it. It is on it's 3rd VE injection pump (4th if you count a used one). Two failures were from leaking o-ring seals. One failure was from metal spawling off of the cam plate. Water contamination in the fuel may have contributed to that failure.
