Which means it has some later, probably civilian, electricity-making machine on it. You're right though that if it was 12 V originally, at least the conversion wouldn't have fried the gas gauge. I've just learned that whenever I see anything non-original in the electrical system, there's no telling what else has or hasn't been converted, hacked, disconnected, spliced, burned up, bypassed, or otherwise modified. Very often these conversions cause some problem, and rather than figure out the problem and fix it, the guy will mess up some other part, and keep messing until he gets it to start and run. At that point there might be little of the rest of the system that's still working. The point is that anything is possible.
