Thanks to everyone who responded re engine, running gear, and winch possibilities for my new '77.
Snow's mostly gone - soon as I get all the sweptside and IH scrap out of the way the '77 is going to get a lmore serious attitude.
"Had to" spend a couple months in HI this winter but the first day back I picked up a beater '90 3/4-ton 4x4 cummins dodge. Paid 2,300. Junkyard axle assemblies were going for more than $1,500 f&r pair and 5.9 cores were $800 and up. So I bit.
Drove it home but frame is tweaked and every piece of sheet metal is dented. 300,000 plus so a rebuild is in the future - but it runs good and doesn't smoke ... much. ;)
Has a later 5 spd and the fuel pump has been rebuilt. Limited-slip rear. Also has pto on the t-case and a Lu-2.
I always crawl over and under a rig and check things out, but I missed that the front d-side shackle/hanger fasteners were gone. So the front of the spring was completely loose from the frame. Steering felt a little loose but not bad.
Btw - will have the stock '77 running gear w/core 318 and 4spd available for around $400 this spring. Located 1.5 hr E of Portland.
