One of my rigs has a carburetor with the top held on by #12-28 screws. At one point I lost one of them and had a terrible time finding a replacement. #12 is one of those sizes where the UNF/SAE version seems to be just about nonexistent. I ended up getting a socket head screw and cutting a slot in it for a screwdriver in case I needed to take the top off out in the boonies.

Recently I opened up some large old Zinsco breaker boxes and decided to file away all the odds and ends of screws, nuts, etc that had fallen to the bottom over the years. Amongst everything else were some of the screws used in the grounding/neutral bar to clamp the wires in their holes. In filing them away I couldn't find any screws in my collection that matched them. I even tried all the metric ones. Finally I put a thread gauge on it and they were #12-28. They even had the same kind of head as the carburetor screws and were the right length. The only difference is they're self-tapping, but that shouldn't matter.

So, if you lose a #12-28 carburetor screw, steal a screw out of the neutral bar of an old Zinsco breaker box.
