For garage and yard work, I wear a corduroy hat with Thinsulate lining, and it has flaps that are normally tucked up inside the hat, but can be pulled down to cover the ears and back of the head in cold weather.
My parents gave it to me probably 20 years ago, and I still have it and use it often.
