So what is the problem with a truck bed 48" off the ground? That is a comfortable working height, kind of like my workbench. ;^)

One thing I did notice from your drawings over on Gordon's site, my flatbed has only 4 crossmembers. The center 2 have more distance between them than to any others so that neither is above the tire. The tires would contact the underside of the flooring before they would contact the crossemembers. But I think you were probably planning for that with crossmembers that are not overly tall? On my truck, this puts the longest span between crossmembers right where you want to carry the heaviest weight, but the 2" thick oak floorboards do not seem to bow any from the weight.

I have loaded my '47 on several occasions and have used all of the 8-inches of rear axle travel. It is surprising how heavy moist black dirt is. The '51 has heavier springs and I have yet to use up all of the travel in its springs. But, it would be easy to load a lot more weight on the flatbed than in a pickup box just by the shear volume of space available.
