I'll second what others have said. The military manual is very easy to follow and has the later rebuild specs. Getting the right pre-load is critical but time consuming. Can be lots of trial and error.

I also used the kit from DC, I did however buy extra shims for setting bearing pre-load from McMaster Carr. They have a nice set with a ton of different thicknesses for about $20. I found the selection in the DC kit a little light, and VPW wants a lot of money for them.

I'd add to make sure everything is super clean, I had a clogged oiling hole I didn't even know was there, did a close examination and noticed the little indent after I cleaned it. Back into the parts washer with a piece of wire and cleaned it out good.

Charles Talbert at M-series has stainless shifter rails if yours are badly rusted or you just want the upgrade. He also recommended painting the interior with Glyptal or similar if you were worried about keeping grease from seeping through any porus surfaces of the case. Figured it couldn't hurt.
