That's you're key. That's the usual symptom of a worn-out drive. The drive is like a bicycle clutch that free-wheels once the engine starts. It's attached to the pinion gear. They usually wear out and are easy to replace. Yours might have just decided to let go in a spectacular way. You could also have a bad spot on the ring gear, but if that's the case, the starter will usually just spin without engaging no matter how many times you try it, until you turn the engine a little bit to get the pinion in line with a good part of the gear. l think your engine is probably okay, and if the starter's shaft isn't bent and you can find a nose casting somewhere, it's probably fixable.
