If the starter shaft is good, you can buy a new "drive" for it that will have the gear. It sounds like the cast-iron nose of your starter got busted, but I bet somebody here has one from a dead starter they could give you. I don't happen to. Everything else usually goes bad first. As Chris says, something very likely caused it to break. Best look things over carefully to try to figure out what broke first before starting it up again. Maybe the stater bolts were loose and it got cockeyed in there? Maybe something in the drive came apart and jammed the gear, which then tore itself loose? Could be a lot of things. I would not leave the pieces in there just because it's "roomy" though. You're liable to all of a sudden here A Really Bad Noise at some unexpected time in the future.
