Bolt size question

OK, here is a question that has bugged me for awhile.
So a 3/8" bolt head is 9/16" A 3/8" nut is also 9/16" A half inch bolt head is 3/4", so is the nut. A 7/16" bolt head is 5/8" so why is it that 99% of the time the nut is 11/16"? Very occasionally you see the nuts at 5/8" but not very often.
I know there are special heavy nuts available in all of the sizes, and they take the next size wrench, but the 7/16 almost always has the larger knutz!
Enlighten me!
