It's a funny thing for sure. Lots of psychology involved that I wouldn't claim to understand. People ask me if some I have is for sale and I just say "no" unless I actually want to sell it, even though I'm sure if they offered me enough money I'd sell anything. Other guy have stuff "for sale" for years, but obviously for a price nobody is willing to pay. On the buying end, all you can do is not get too attached to it. If the guy's jacking you around, wish him good luck, walk away, and forget about it. Life's too short. On the selling end, I'm convinced that "good vibes" are worth something. Put a reasonable price on it, sell it to somebody you feel good about, and don't bother thinking those "I probably could have gotten another grand" thoughts.

I know there are those who can't feel good about a deal unless they feel they've cheated the other guy. It doesn't matter what the price is. The main thing to them is to make sure the other guy (could be the buyer or could be the seller) is hurting when the transaction is over. On the buying end, it's usually a rich guy who could easily have paid the asking price, but there's no fun in that for him. On the selling end, it'll be the guy who says something like "If I don't get 6 grand for this truck, it's going to the crusher next week.", just so he can see the pain in the truck-lover's eyes as he imagines it getting crushed. I have definitely met people in all walks of life who would rather get what they want be being tricky and devious or by playing weird mental games than by being straight-up about it. Maybe that's how the real world works. It's not my thing, though, so these days as soon as I see any hint of that, I'm done.
