For ever at idle. The worst bad head I saw was a brand new factory defect with a hole you could stick a finger through from exhaust port to water. I found it because it took 6 gallons of coolant, and still not full. Changed to a new head, and had to run it up the steepest hill in town at full throttle to blow all the antifreeze out the tail pipe.
