The 1957-60 W100s had the following starting serial numbers (VIN)

1957 82901001
1957 81910001
1958 L6W1L01001
1958 L8W1L01001
1959 M6W1L01001
1959 M8W1L01001
1960 06W1L10001 (this is actually the Parts Availability Number but it is often used as a Serial Number.)
1960 216***** (*starting number unknown)
1960 08W1L10001 (this is actually the Parts Availability Number but it is often used as a Serial Number.)
1960 218***** (starting number unknown)

Let me know what you find and I would be happy to help you decode it.

For some years the number you need will be on a tag on the drivers rear door jamb. In other years you may have to find the number on the frame, which is stamped on the drivers side facing the tire near the front axle front spring shackle. To get the number off the frame it is often necessary to clean the frame with a wire brush before the numbers can be seen.

Eric
