Last summer my boys and I did a very small remodel project. This house had been moved from the old Navy housing at Farragut about 50 years ago. It had an old oil fired boiler and a closed hot water heat system, consisting of all galvanized pipe, from 2" down to 3/4". We replaced the boiler with an electric unit, far more efficient and compact, than the original. In doing this, the plumbers had to cut into the existing galvanized piping, install di-electric fittings, and run new 2" copper to the new location for the new boiler. Amazing to me as that the interior of the old galvanized piping was absolutely clean and free of rust. It must be, as you mentioned, the fact that it was a closed system, not exposed to fresh oxygen, that prevented the usual corrosion.
