Is tis an origial 230 engine or a Chrysler Industrail engine. The heat sheild is a must, routing the fuel line away from the manifold between the fuel pump and carb. The fuel line should run in front of the engine to the pump. Also a company called Now and Then makes a kit for the pump, they use materails that are compatable with todays fuels. They are pricey, but like anything its old and needs attention. It is not dificult to rebuild, take off one piece at a time lay it out in order. Also what is the condition of your engine, Have you done a compression check lately. With the other advice given hopefully this will put you on the right track.
