Stromberg carbs, very common in Oz. If you really must mess with a flattie, go with the long block as it's inherently a better design. Punch it out, stroke it, go for a better cam profile and better cam material and you are still restricted by the breathing. Punch out the valves, port it, add tune-port injection and a blower, or seriously rework the head to up the compression and improve the squish factor and you start to get somewhere. Of course all this isn't cheap and the end result isn't all that reliable considering the overall original design. Unless you specifically want to spend a lot of money and gain experience with hotting up an old style engine, you should consider an engine swap that will give you more horsepower in stock form, or go the late model intercooled turbo diesel route.
Just my 2 cents worth.
