It was mostly about styling -- "low" was cool for everything in the '60s -- 1-story "ranch" houses, "danish modern" furniture, coffee tables, and cars. They needed an economy engine that would still allow a low hood profile and in many cases allow a V8 option in the same space.

However the slant 6 configuration had the nice side-effect of allowing a much better breathing, more balanced intake manifold than any factory straight 6. It was also one of the first to come from the factory with electronic ignition. They got amazingly good fuel economy for their time (25-30mg in a Dart), and still had decent power. It was fresh design with a lot of potential and I've read about some that have really been souped up.
